Part Time Position: Events & Access Coordinator at the Paul K. Longmore Institute on Disability, San Francisco State University 

The Paul K. Longmore Institute on Disability at San Francisco State University (SFSU) is looking for a part-time events & access coordinator to oversee hybrid and online programs grounded in disability studies and promoting disability justice. The position will be held under the University Corporation, external to SFSU. This can be a part-time position, or if the applicant is seeking full-time work and benefits, they can also apply for the Longmore Institute’s Emerge position to be housed inside SFSU. Major programs will include Superfest Disability Film Festival in October and Superfest Showcases throughout the year, the continuing Tiger Talk series; a one-day hybrid symposium July 28 for the Emerge fellowship; a monthly Café Crip series; and other online programs to be determined.  

Qualities of an Ideal Candidate 

  • strong organizational skills 
  • always thinking a few steps ahead 
  • strong communication skulls 
  • experience thinking about access for people with disabilities 
  • comfortable using Zoom, Google sheets, drive, Excel, Microsoft Office, MailChimp, Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook 
  • experience with basic graphic design to generate event flyers and publicity images (Adobe, Canva, or other software programs) 
  • non-profit experience and familiarity with the disability community are major pluses 
  • a passion for connecting with diverse disability community and a desire to build new connections 

Job Duties May Include:  

  • marketing, sponsorship solicitations, and community partnerships for Superfest film festival 
  • coordinating Superfest (phase 2 jury, filmmaker access collateral with audio description and captioning companies, venue and digital platform day-of plans, VIP party, and accompanying festival panels) 
  • supervising paid Longmore Student Fellows to support these programs 
  • planning radically accessible events both on and off the SF State campus 
  • coordinating the Institute’s social media presence (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) 
  • managing budgets and financial accounting, getting people and contractors paid in a timely fashion 

Details: 

This job includes flexible hours; the schedule will be set with the selected applicant’s preferences in combination with the timing needs of Longmore programs and events. Remote work will often be possible, excluding in-person programs requiring an event lead.  

$2,924.00 - $3,249.00 per month for part-time work (.5 FTE) (commensurate with experience)

This is a temporary position hiring as soon as possible through December 15, 2023 with the possibility of extension tied to strategic planning discussions at the Longmore Institute.

Part Time Job Position: Emerge Project Coordinator at the Paul K. Longmore Institute on Disability, San Francisco State University 

Emerge is a grant-funded program under the Longmore Institute on Disability within the college of Liberal and Creative Arts. The Emerge Project Coordinator will report to the Longmore Institute Interim Director. The Project Coordinator is a key member of the Emerge leadership team and supports the success of the programs delivered by Emerge, a summer workshop for disabled scholars, artists, and activists to promote scholar-activism. This role will develop and oversee key components of the Emerge program such as assist with travel and lodging arrangements; prep reading materials; coordinate the access team (ASL/CART); coordinate payments, honorariums, and vendor paperwork with the university; plan details for site visits; and manage the plans and publicity for the one-day symposium. Some of the fellows will not attend in person, so the Emerge Project Coordinator will also oversee tech support, helping ensure that our digital attendees have full inclusion in all our programs and events. Key initiatives are the publicity and selection of Emerge fellows, arranging support for each Emerge fellow in the form of an assigned mentor, travel, and access, coordinating site visits to local disability rights and justice organizations, facilitating discussion for the fellows, and arranging details for a one-day hybrid symposium (catering, publicity, registration, run of program, access), and post-fellowship evaluation measures. In addition, this role is responsible to support the program analysis and program reporting to funders, and to support other Longmore Student Fellows who will be undergraduate and graduate students working on this project and supporting the Emerge Project Coordinator on their work. 

Position Information: 

Emerge Program Oversight, Program Development, and Facilitation 

  • Design and implement vision for Emerge workshop and culminating symposium. 
  • Oversee publicity for and yearly recruitment of Emerge Fellows, oversee jury process to select fellows. 
  • Serve as main point of contact for Emerge participants and provide support by maintaining regular contact with the cohort in preparation for their travel, addressing any access needs they may have to develop an accommodation plan, and problem solving participant challenges to support fellowship completion. 
  • Meet with local disability rights and justice organizations to develop relationships for collaborating partners and site visits. 
  • Public speaking to represent the Emerge project and the Longmore Institute on Disability. 
  • Ensure timely information is given to all participants. 
  • Communicate with Emerge mentors and Longmore Institute Interim Director to identify fellows who are struggling and facilitate timely support for them. 
  • Develop and facilitate an on-going practice to ensure Emerge participants are working towards final projects that can be shared at the symposium. Plan for how we will support Fellows who have unanticipated challenges pop up that get in the way of meeting their planned goals.  
  • Oversee data collection and writing of annual funder reports in collaboration with Longmore Interim Director. 
  • Independent determination of approaches to project and priorities. Work is reviewed against overall goals and objectives, with full accountability for results. 
  • Use of ingenuity and innovation to conceive of new approaches and solutions to address complex problems and issues. 
  • Communicate with Emerge mentors, help match mentors to Emerge fellows and support Emerge fellows with mentor meetings as needed. 
  • Organize and develop Emerge facilitation strategies and help facilitate the majority of Emerge meetings in July while hybrid.   
  • Influence over key objectives and longer-term goals of Emerge program with high visibility or broad impact within and outside the Longmore Institute on Disability. 
  • Independent determination of approaches to project and priorities. Work is reviewed against overall goals and objectives, with full accountability for results. 

Logistics, Travel, Payments, and Reporting 

  • Work with Interim Director on all aspects related to administration of the Emerge program. 
  • Coordinate travel and lodging for all Emerge in-person participants. 
  • Work with Disability Programs and Resource Center to arrange accommodations for Emerge participants, community organization members, and/or symposium participants. 
  • Manage the Emerge budget and ensure we are spending on budget. Adjust budget as needed through dialogue with the Interim Director. 
  • Submit paperwork for all community organization honorarium, fellowship stipends, excursion tickets, mentor honorarium, and other payments relating to the Emerge project. 
  • Coordinate with Longmore Institute Interim Director for program evaluation, help develop survey to assess the program’s success at meeting promised goals and objectives from grant proposal, and communicate the importance of survey participation to Emerge fellows, partner organizations, and symposium attendees. 

Longmore Student Fellow Oversight: 

  • Oversee Longmore Student Fellows who will support the Emerge project and will require advice and guidance as they carry out work led by and assisting the project coordinator. 

Other duties as assigned 

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Entry to this classification requires general knowledge and skills in the applicable administrative and/or program field with a foundational knowledge of public administration principles, practices, and methods. This foundation would normally be obtained through a bachelor's degree and/or equivalent training and administrative work experience involving study, analysis, and/or evaluation leading to the development or improvement of administrative policies, procedures, practices, or programs.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply fundamental concepts in disability studies to the practice and programs of the Longmore Institute. 
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within and outside the work group and serve as a liaison for the organizational unit. 
  • Thorough knowledge of policies, procedures, and outside regulations pertaining to and/or administrative specialty. 
  • Working knowledge of operational and fiscal analysis and techniques.  Working knowledge of budget policies and procedures. 
  • Ability to take initiative and independently plan, organize, coordinate, and perform work in various situations where numerous and diverse demands are involved. 
  • Skill in the research, development and evaluation of policies and programs, including skill in the collection, evaluation, and interpretation of data to develop sound conclusions and make appropriate recommendations. 
  • Expertise in investigating and analyzing problems with a broad administrative impact and implications. Ability to make independent decisions and exercise sound judgment. 
  • Ability to train others on new skills and procedures and provide lead work direction. 
  • Thorough knowledge of and ability to apply extensive expertise to complex programs and/or administrative specialties, including pertinent laws and regulations. 
  • Ability to understand problems from a broad, interactive perspective and discern applicable underlying principles to conceive of and develop strategic solutions. 
  • Ability to work with representatives from public and private entities and handle potentially sensitive situations.  Demonstrated consultative skills in working with internal and external constituent groups. 
  • Ability to effectively present ideas and concepts in written or presentation format and use consultative and facilitation skills to gain consensus. 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Highly organized and detail-oriented person. 
  • Experience working with disabled people, living with a disability, and/or being in community with disabled people. 
  • Experience using Zoom meetings. 
  • Strong professional communication skills to coordinate details with community organizations and Emerge Fellows. 
  • Expertise in accommodations and creative thinking that goes beyond legal compliance.  
  • Personal background or experience with disability studies, disability justice activism, and/or disability-focused art practice. 
  • Knowledge and/or relationships with Bay Area disability organizations. 
  • Experience navigating complex bureaucratic systems and paperwork. 
  • Experience with MailChimp, Canva, and developing accessible forms of media. 
  • Experience facilitating hybrid meetings 

Environmental/Physical/Special: 

Some remote work is available, but this position will require in-person participation and site visits throughout the Bay Area, particularly in the month of July, to help set up digital participation for other disabled people unable to be on site.
