About the Festival

Superfest launched in the 1970s in Los Angeles. Its mission was to present an educational, empowering, and entertaining film festival that celebrates disability. After two successful decades in Los Angeles, the film festival moved to the Bay Area in 1998. From 1998-2011 it operated as Culture! Disability! Talent!’s, annual film festival. In 2012, the Longmore Institute teamed up with LightHouse to relaunch Superfest: International Disability Film Festival.

Today Superfest is a two-day festival with screenings in downtown Berkeley and San Francisco. It enriches the Bay Area by cultivating an event that celebrates disability as a generative and creative force in cinema and more broadly in culture.
